English learning guide · Updated 24 September 2026
Use an online level check to choose learning materials or find a starting point for a course. These four options differ in the skills they test, the detail they give you, and whether you need an account.
Choose a level to explore all four skills, topics, grammar examples and official exam score mappings.
Each level opens its own reading guide. Start wherever your current skills fit.
A1–A2 describe basic use, B1–B2 independent use, and C1–C2 proficient use. Your listening, reading, speaking and writing can develop at different rates. The CEFR also includes interaction and mediation, such as helping someone understand information.
The guides focus on usable language, with no fixed vocabulary-count target. Their grammar and topic lists are study suggestions; official CEFR descriptors describe performance. Exam mappings are reported separately by each test owner and do not guarantee a score.
01 / Compare the options
A placement test is most useful when you know what its score covers. A quick grammar check and a four-skill assessment do not answer the same question.
A good first stop if you want a short check and free learning materials matched to an approximate level.
Keep in mind: the result is an approximate indication. This quick test does not directly assess speaking or writing.
Take the free level testTry this if you are considering a Cambridge English exam and want a quick indication of which exam to explore.
Keep in mind: Cambridge states that this is not an official exam. Use it as a quick guide, not as proof of proficiency.
Try Cambridge's free checkChoose between a 50-minute reading-and-listening test and a 90-minute four-skill test. EF SET reports results in relation to the CEFR and provides a certificate for its full-length tests.
Keep in mind: acceptance of its certificate varies. Ask the institution or employer that will receive it before relying on it for an application.
Take the 4-skill testUse its level test to check your approximate grammar level, then practise grammar, vocabulary, reading, and listening at individual levels.
Keep in mind: the site describes the result as an approximate grammar level, not a complete English profile.
Take the grammar level test02 / Choose by purpose
British Council LearnEnglish gives a quick approximate result and links it to level-appropriate practice.
EF SET's four-skill test gives you a wider picture than a multiple-choice grammar check.
Cambridge's free test helps you decide which Cambridge exam to explore next.
03 / Make the result useful
CEFR levels are helpful labels, but your ability can be different across skills. Treat a single overall result as a starting point.
Check what was tested. Write down whether the test included reading, listening, speaking, writing, or only grammar and vocabulary.
Look at your skill profile. Compare separate skill results where available. The Council of Europe's CEFR self-assessment grid can help you reflect on listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
Add a short performance sample. For class placement, pair the online score with a brief speaking conversation and a short piece of writing, especially if the online test did not assess those skills.
